Every monsoon, Assam braces for floods. But their regularity shouldn’t make the devastation feel inevitable. The 2026 Assam floods exposed a hard truth: the state’s vulnerability comes not just from extreme rainfall and the mighty Brahmaputra, but from how the state manages its rivers, wetlands, forests, settlements and infrastructure.

This year’s immediate trigger was intense monsoon rainfall across Upper Assam and the neighbouring hill states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. As that water poured into an already swollen system, the Brahmaputra and its tributaries rose rapidly, inundating villages, farmland and towns. But rainfall alone doesn’t explain the scale of the damage.

Why Assam Floods Keep Getting Worse

Assam is naturally prone to flooding. For communities on its banks, flooding is only part of the problem. Riverbank erosion can sweep away farmland, homes and sometimes whole settlements — land that existed a year ago may vanish as the river shifts course.

It’s why simply “controlling” the river is the wrong idea.
